Soundtrack

Obviously my soundtrack is going to be the dialogue between Voldemort and Harry, but there are a few moments like long pauses, where i may have to cut or trim the track.

At the start of the soundtrack I thought that the dialogue started too abruptly. It didn't give the viewer a chance to prepare themselves for the intense conversation. So I kept the particles on at the start, progressing in numbers, and moved the track back 4 seconds. I then had to search other tracks of the same scene in order to get similar sound.

Experimenting

I wanted to create a dark atmosphere for my background with moving particles, so I googled tutorials on how to create a particle movement. I found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq2op6yqvFk
and it was so easy to follow and once i learned the basic steps i had created a background in about half an hour.

First I created a colour gradient with four different shades of dark greens and blues.

Then I added an animation preset called particle world.

I then changed the colour of the particles going from black to green using a color ramp and changed the gravity and birth rate.

I really liked how this effect turned out but once i added text i found the moving particles too distracting from the text. Once I took the particles away from behind the text, the background was boring. So i added a layer of grunge texture and blended it with the coloured layer.

So now, once the text appears, the particles slowly and subtly fade out so there is a nice background still left and the only thing you are focused on is the text. Below is the first word and how the background will look throughout.

Decisions

I am such a geek for Harry Potter, the films and the books. The scene when Voldemort returns is probably one of the most iconic and anticipated of them all. I know the scene off by heart, it is dark and intense and feel I could create a real atmosphere though type and graphics.

The harry potter series is all about love and loss, the main storyline being that harry lost his parents as a young child and Voldemort lost his powers, the films build up to the fourth where Voldemort makes his return in this scene.

Research and Inspiration

I have chosen to make a kinetic typography film, including perhaps an inspirational speech or dialogue from a film.

first off i have looked at interesting kinetic type films, these are some of my favourites:

I love this, a simple grey background, with a simple sans-serif text, creates an extremely powerful message with a speech. I love the movement of the type, how letters and words evolve to relate to the speech.

dialogue from one of my favourite tv series. i love the graphics used in this to help subtly set the scene

I love the feel of this film, how the red grunge background relates to the danger and darkness of fight club. the movements are sharp and swift, the text is big and bold.

I researched some quotes, looked at some films, but i thought that i should work my film on something i'm interested in.

Brief 2 - Initial Thoughts

For our second brief we have been given four main themes, based on the famous Edgar Alan Poe's writings, love and loss, the double self, the letter and obsession.

  • kinetic typography
  • short story
  • animation
  • experimental

These are the types of media that we can use to create our film. Straight away the kinetic type jumps out at me. I love typography and feel my skills on after effects are progressing and would like to create something interesting.

I love the effect of kinetic type, it can take a piece of dialogue, a speech or a song, and play with the words to make them come to life and intrigue the viewer.
